THE INFLUENCE OF MUSICAL GROUP FOR TEENAGER’S PERSONALITY

A.    INTRODUCTION

According to Andreas Agil Munarwidya-Yogyakarta State University in his essay titled “Solusi Bukan Polusi: Dari Mahasiswa Untuk Indonesia yang Prestatif”, it is already become a certainly history that young generation (youth) is generation who mostly expected their work in this diverse country. This historical certainly supported by Indonesian old adage about youth, “Pemuda adalah tonggak sejarah bangsa”. Therefore, it is not surprising that they are always expected to participate in the matters happened in their community or recident, either individual and group. First president of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarano said the same thing abouth youth, “Beri aku 10 pemuda, maka akan kuguncangkan dunia”. It means that the future of a country is depend on  its youth condition.

 In fact, a lot of young people trapped into the comfort life that lead them to be less of productiv in realizing the expectations of their society. They are much more actively to “have fun” rather than having to do the social service or useful activities in remote areas in parts of our archipelago. They are busier with trivial things today. Moreover, they start being afflicted by the paradigm which is developed become a mindset, “Muda foya-foya, Tua kaya raya, Mati masuk surga”. As a result, the activities that carried out by most of them are spending time with something exciting with few of benevits for them and everyone else. In the other words, they are growing up become selfish, who just think and care about their own lives. Because of this reality, what could be expected from them?

The condition of Teenagers in Indonesia are very concerned right now. Actually, there are many factors influence the condition. Some of them are environtment, musics, technology, education, family, friends, etc. Here, we are mostly concern in the idol, especially the influence of musical group as an idol.

From this case, it is very important for us to care about how the people who have an idol (especially for teenagers) imitate their idol to be used as a reference in carrying out of daily activities. As we know that adolescence (teenagers) is the age when they are looking for a model for their lives.

B.     AN IDOL

According to “Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia”, Idol means person, picture, sculpture, etc which is whorshiped. While in the oxford dictionary, idol means person or something which is greatly admired, loved, or revered. We can concluded that the idol is everything which is very admired, loved, and even worshiped so much by a person or community. It has become a certainty that when we love something, we will not be objected to sacrifice everything for what we love. Similarly idolize, people who have an idol certainly will sacrifice for what he had idolized. People who love the idol will worship the idol, and even totally imitate idol either physics or characters.

Most of Indonesian teenagers are still in process of searching for their identity, so they  need a figure to get a specific reference for finding identity. When they find a person or anything that could be an idol, they will imitate all side of idol’s lives, including character, performance, body language etc. For example, if someone are becoming fan of a musical group, he will imitate the life style of the musical group. Even though we know that most of musical group’s behaviors today are out of control. For example are using drugs, free sex, drunk and others.

C.    NO MUSIC NO LIVE

The term of “no music no live”is very familiar in the teenagers’s live today. It is not only well known, but it is also used as a reference. Music is really able to “build a human character”, especially for teenagers who still search the figure for build their identity. In addition, the song’s lyric have a power of soul. It means that the lyric can describe what someone feels in heart, and it can persuade the listener about the message of the song.

We have been suggested by this term and use a music as the accompaniment in our  life. Moreover, teenagers who fall in love will tend to listen a song with romantic lyric, and willing to do a romantic thing in their affairs. Likewise poets who are broken heart, they also tend to listen the song with heartbreak lyric. Moreover, many heartbreak songs encourages someone to do horrible act, like suicide.

This term is also very exactly for several teenagers, because when they are bored and lonely, they prefer listening music to lose the boredom. Everything they do, everywhere they go, accompanied by music. And of course, almost people have their favorite band. Music is also able to influence humans’s personality. In some cases, even adult man also could be changed in their character and performance after watching a musical group concert. Moreover, teenagers who still looking for identity. So we actually agree if the musical group is able to change or affect identity of teenagers. They have a mindset that love the music, including musical group is cool. Moreover, when we surfed in internet and typed a sentence “music is” in google search then we pressed enter key, so the sentences that shown up were about “NO MUSIC NO LIVE”.  It means that music is very close with youth and teenagers.

Professor Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK, has undertaken the largest study so far of musical tastes and personality type. He is an expert of musical psychology and has carried out extensive research on the social and applied psychology of music, particularly the relationship between pop music culture and deviant behavior in adolescence, music and consumer behavior, and the role of musical preference in everyday life.

Over the course of three years, Professor North asked more than 36,000 people in more than 60 countries to rate a wide range of musical styles in order of preference. Certain aspects of personality were also measured by questionnaire.

The results showed:

·         Blues fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing, gentle and at ease.

·         Jazz fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing and at ease.

·         Classical music fans have high self-esteem, are creative, introvert and at ease.

·         Rap fans have high self-esteem and are outgoing.

·         Opera fans have high self-esteem, are creative and gentle.

·         Country and western fans are hardworking and outgoing.

·         Reggae fans have high self-esteem, are creative, not hardworking, outgoing, gentle and at ease.

·         Dance fans are creative and outgoing but not gentle.

·         Indie fans have low self-esteem, are creative, not hard working, and not gentle.

·         Bollywood fans are creative and outgoing.

·         Rock/heavy metal fans have low self-esteem, are creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, and at ease.

·         Chart pop fans have high self-esteem, are hardworking, outgoing and gentle, but are not creative and not at ease.

·         Soul fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing,gentle, and at ease.

From these data we can conclude that the genre of music which is invisible can effect a person’s identity. Moreover a musical group, which is clearly visible by the eyes. The musician can gives some exemples of measures to act and invites his fans to do something. So, can we sure that the music genres or music tastes effects a person’s identity and character? Of course yes!

E.     OUR REALITY

Accordance with the development of music, teenagers get many changes in their live. Some years ago, they were very difficult to know and listen the newest songs. But now, they are greatly facilitated by the developed technology which gives good serve for them in everything. For example, they can  search newest information and anything they want by using internet easily, including watcing music video, listening Mp3 until browsing all kind of musics from all around the world. They can do it only by sitting in their home. Of course, by watching many kind of musics and musical group will affect their personality. In addition, there are many new musical groups with their own character, even good or bad.

Actually, the music is good, even according to some experts, the benefit of  music can be used for the learning process, even for the disease treatment. It will be very good when the favorite musical group have a good behavior. But, how about the musical group who have a bad behavior? Of course, it will be dangeorus and have to be worried when the musical group that brings it do not give a good example of behavior and from the fans who are too fanatic. As we know  that the negative things are faster imitated.

We can see the reality of indonesian musical group, while the concert, the fans move uncontrol until there was a person trampled, fight even until someone killed. Surely, almost the audience who join there are teenagers and still a student. In many cases, when it held musical consert, there were happened a criminal things, such as bullying, drunk, free sex, fight, and movement of fans which is out of control. It means that this event actually give more disadvantages for teenagers than benefit. They have to spend their money, do not sleep all along the night just because they watching idol consert. Of course, they will waste much time without get benefit for them. In the other side, teenagers who become fan of a musical group will try hard to see the consert of his favourite musical group. Everything they are going to do, until craziest thing just want to realize their dream.

Actually, there are some disadvantages got by teenagers when they can not select good musical group as an idol:

a.      Lose their own identity

               A fanatic fans of musical group will do everything for trying to be same with their idol, including life style, body language, performance, until the littlest thing done by idol. They will forget that they have own identity which have many diferences with an idol. For example, a fanatic fans of K-POP will try to perform like Korean boy, while they live in Indonesia with different cultures and society. In the other case, a fanatic fan of Europe boy band, will imitate their idol too. As we know that western life style is not suitable for our teenagers in Indonesia. So, it has to be worried when our teenagers try to imitate their idol and lost their identity as an Indonesian with special identity.

               Many cases of fans who are willing to do anything just for watching, or even take a photos with their idol, no matter they have to do, no matter how much money they have to spend. As willing to queue for long, sunbathe, and so forth. Clearly this is a wasting time. Not sure to wait that long yet, the fans can get something positive, exactly with this the fans majority are students get more negative than positive.

b.      They will spend their time by concerning their musical group.

               As we know that the main task for teenagers are study hard in order they become succesfull and useful person. But, if they just spend their time with listening and browsing music, watching musical consert, or do another activities about music, they will forget with their main task. They just have one idea in their mind, “Music And Fun”. So, what will happen with our country, if all of our young generation just spend their time with music? Indonesia need a young generation who are ready to give contribution for it.

F.     CONCLUSION

               Music according to some experts is able to be an effective learning media. Based on research conducted by Herry Chunagi (1996) and Siegel (1999), explains that the neuron will be the circuit if there is a stimulus of music, stimuli such as movement, caress, the sound makes the neurons that separated mesh and integrate themselves in the brain’s circuitry. More music’s stimuli that given to us, it will increasingly complex tangle between the neurons. That in the fact of the basis of mathematical ability, logic, language, music, and emotion in the childern. Therefore, the musicians can be described as a teacher for those who learn throught the music. The learner can be able to understand a lessons through delivery method performed by the teacher. And also the musicians, the method or the taste of what they use to deliver the message in the song, so the listeners are able to understand the messages in the content or the purpose from the song. Not only for the learning media, the music can be used as a means for medical therapy.

The research in Finland shows the positive effects from the music on patients with depression. The music has a calming effect that can make the brain’s waves become stable. Sing a music can also give a strength for those who are depressed, although the music can not completely heal the depression, but the music can allivate the symptoms of depression.

The study explains that the music can help the healing process for a depressed patient, because of the music has an incredible power. The music can influence a person’s mood. Morover, coupled with the charisma of the singer, can certainly give something extraordinary for his audience. Like people with disabilities who have the ability to be able more on music can inspire a person compared with a normal people who become a musicians. This is why the musical group really influence the person’s identity.

Howover, all of the influence can be depend on the teenagers (as the people who loved the idol), as long as they save themselves well and carefully, and able to select and sort out of what is good for them, or just listening without too fanatical about what the singer or the musical group that bring the songs. Surely, the musical group that sing a song give some advices in the song in whatever genres. There is a messages that they will send to the fans, to the audience and the listeners. The messages can be positive things or negative things that can miring the audiences to a something bad.

As we know that everything depends on ourselves. If we choose to be better then most likely we are going to be better. But when we choose to be worse (similarly on whats going on today) then the chances to be better is just a little bit. So it is important for us to be carefull in selecting an idol, especially musical group idol in order we find the right figure to guide us for finding our identity.

The idol is so influence on a person’s behavior changes. Starting from the appearance, behavior, character, and even the taste. And in the process of the search for identity, the students are still very unstable and easily influenced. So we have to be carefull to choose the idol. In this modern age, it is to choose a good thing and plenty, but choose poorly is much more. Moreover with the modern technology, we can find everything easily and fastly anytime and from everywhere. So once again “everything depends on ourselves. If we choose to be better so we are going to be better, but if we choose to be worse (like whats going on today) we will be worse”. CHOOSE THE GOOD IDOL FOR OUR IDENTITY!
